But here’s what’s happening on your windows every single morning while that gray sits over the coast — and it explains why glass that looked clean in April looks hazy by July despite not having a single raindrop touch it.
What May Gray and June Gloom Actually Are
May Gray and June Gloom are the names Southern California locals give to a seasonal weather pattern driven by the marine stratus layer — a deck of low-level oceanic clouds that forms over the cool waters of the Pacific and pushes onshore overnight. Meteorologists call it low stratus, sometimes coastal fog, and it’s fundamentally a product of the interaction between the cold California Current flowing south along the coast and the warmer inland air above it.
Here’s the mechanism: the ocean surface off San Clemente runs significantly cooler than the inland air during late spring and early summer. That temperature difference causes moisture-laden marine air to condense near the water’s surface, forming a cloud layer that sits at roughly 500 to 2,000 feet of elevation — low enough to drape over the bluffs of Marblehead, settle into the canyons above Forster Ranch, and turn T-Street into a soft wall of gray by 6 AM.
By 10 or 11 AM most days, the sun breaks through and burns it off. Inland neighborhoods — Talega, Rancho San Clemente, everything east of Los Patrones Parkway — often get less of it, or get it later. But in Southwest San Clemente, the Riviera District, Cyprus Shore, and anywhere within half a mile of the water, this happens almost every morning from May through mid-July.
Why Marine Stratus Is Specifically Bad for Windows
Here’s what most people don’t know: marine fog is not pure water.
The moisture in the marine layer carries dissolved sodium chloride — sea salt — along with trace quantities of magnesium, potassium, and other oceanic compounds. When this fog condenses on your windows overnight, those dissolved particles come with it. When the morning sun burns the moisture off, the water evaporates. The salt doesn’t.
What’s left behind is a microscopic salt film — too thin to see on any single morning, but accumulating deposit by deposit, morning by morning, six to eight weeks straight. By the time the June Gloom season ends, that film has built up into a visible surface haze. Run your finger across the glass and it feels slightly gritty. Sunlight hits it at a low angle and the pane looks foggy from inside even on a clear afternoon.

When the Marine Layer Combines With Hard Water
Here’s where it gets expensive to ignore.
San Clemente and greater Orange County tap water runs 250 to 400 parts per million in dissolved minerals — primarily calcium carbonate and magnesium. That’s genuinely hard water. Every time your irrigation system sprays near a window, it deposits a measure of those minerals on the glass.
By itself, either source — marine salt or sprinkler minerals — is removable with professional cleaning. The problem is when both run simultaneously on the same glass for months. Summer is when this happens: the marine layer is depositing salt every morning, and sprinklers are running three nights a week, and the sun is baking each deposit at full California intensity.
